ORANGE COUNTYBOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />PUBLIC HEALTH MONTH PROCLAMATION <br />APRIL 2001 <br />Whereas, Over the past 50 years, the United States has achieved significant increases in <br />life expectancy and reductions in the incidence of injury, disability and disease, <br />Whereas, Of the 50 additional years of life expectancy we have gained since the turn of the <br />century, the public health approach is credited with the majority— <br />approximately 25 years —of our improvements in our health status and expanded <br />life expectancy, <br />Whereas, <br />Promoting the health and well -being of all residents of Orange County is <br />paramount; and <br />Whereas, <br />Controlling and eliminating communicable diseases are necessary to ensure that <br />our communities are healthy places in which to live; and <br />Whereas, <br />Protecting residents by safeguarding water and food supplies and monitoring <br />waste discharge systems is critical for environmental and personal health; and <br />Whereas, <br />Encouraging healthy lifestyle behaviors assures optimal quality of life and <br />improved health status; and <br />Whereas, <br />Ensuring the optimal growth and development for all Orange County children is <br />vital for the future of our communities; and <br />Whereas, Public Health contributes to the prosperity of Orange County residents by <br />promoting health, preventing disease, and protecting the environment, everyday, <br />every where, and for everybody regardless of religious, ethnic or socioeconomic <br />background; <br />Whereas Public Health Month provides the focused opportunity for the public and public <br />health professionals to celebrate collaborative efforts that have led to <br />community health successes and forge new partnerships to battle emerging <br />threats; and <br />Whereas Public Health Month provides an opportunity to highlight and commend the <br />efforts ofpublic health professionals to protect, promote and enhance the health <br />of all residents across Orange County; and <br />Therefore, <br />We hereby proclaim April 2001 as PUBLIC HEALTH MONTH in Orange <br />.ounty. <br />'&e I . <br />Stephen Halkiotis, Chair <br />Board of County Commissioners <br />
