ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: June 5, 2012
Action Agenda
Item No. 5 -d
SUBJECT: Application for State Aid to Public Libraries
DEPARTMENT: Library PUBLIC HEARING: (Y /N) No
ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT:
Application for State Aid to Public Lucinda Munger, (919)245 -2528
Libraries
PURPOSE: To authorize the Chair of the Board of Orange County Commissioners to sign the
application for State Aid grant as required by the State Library of North Carolina.
BACKGROUND: In order to be eligible for State Aid, all public libraries are required to annually
submit an application to the North Carolina State Library. In the past the application has been
signed by the Chair of the Hyconeechee Regional Library and submitted by the Regional Library
Director. However, with the dissolution of the regional library system on July 1, 2012, the
Orange County Library will become its own County public library system. Because of the new
status, it is now required that the application be signed by the Chair of the Board of County
Commissioners and submitted by the County Library Director. It is anticipated that the Library
will meet all the eligibility requirements listed on the application. All applications are due to the
State Library no later than June 15, 2012.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: Estimated state aid for Orange County should be between $110,000 and
$125,000 based on State Aid formulas. There is no match required for this application for State
Aid.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board authorize the Chair to
sign this application and all future annual applications for State Aid to Public Libraries.
