WHEREAS, the dedicated people serving the public at water and sewer utilities have made
significant contributions in developing, operating and maintaining these systems;
and
WHEREAS, through the Taste of Hope Customer Assistance Program, OWASA customers
can have their monthly bills automatically rounded up to the nearest dollar as a
donation to help families in need; and
WHEREAS, the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service uses Taste of Hope donations to
temporarily help OWASA customers when they are unable to pay their
water/sewer bills;
NOW, THEREFORE, the Orange County Board of Commissioners does hereby proclaim the
second through the eighth of May, two thousand and four as
DRINKING WATER WEEK
in Orange County and urges all citizens to recognize the contributions and
service of water and sewer utilities to our community.
AND FURTHER, the Board of Commissioners encourages OWASA customers to participate as
donors for pennies per month in the Taste of Hope program, and to contact
OWASA for information and to become Taste of Hope donors.
This the twentieth day of April, 2004.
VOTE: UNANIMOUS
Chair Jacobs introduced Greg Feller, OWASA's Public Affairs Director. Greg Feller
said that OWASA appreciates the Board's support of this program. In a couple of days, they will
be announcing a Taste of Hope logo contest. The purpose of the contest is to publicize the
program and not just to get a new logo. He reminded the public that OWASA is anon-profit
public utility and all of their rates are set to cover costs, so they are unable to help their
customers except through donations. This program casts less than $12 a year for each
customer to participate.
Commissioner Brown asked Mr. Feller how to get involved in this program and Greg
Feller said to either call OWASA at 968-4421, or go to their website at www.owasa.org. Those
that do not get water from OWASA can send donations to the Inter-Faith Council.
Commissioner Brown said that this Board and the Towns have collaborated for years
to keep the drinking water supply as fresh and clean as passible.
Greg Feller said that they won a taste test award this past November. He said that
the protection of the watersheds is part of this.
Chair Jacobs asked about the percentage of customers participating in Taste of
Hope and Greg Feller said 6%.
7.
