WHEREAS, total domestic tourism in Orange County generated an economic impact of more <br />than $111 million in 2002 - an increase of 3.4 percent over the previous year -ranking the <br />county 22 out of 100 counties in North Carolina in travel expenditures; and <br />WHEREAS, state and local tax revenues from travel to Orange County amounted to $8.96 <br />million in 2002, representing a $73 tax saving to each County resident; and <br />WHEREAS, more than 1,710 jobs in Orange County were directly attributable to travel and <br />tourism; and <br />WHEREAS, travel generated a $25.89 million payroll in 2002, and <br />WHEREAS, our area attractions, welcome centers and tours hosted mare than 1.3 million <br />visitors in 2003, an increase of 27 percent over 2002; and <br />WHEREAS, as people throughout the county, state, country and world become more aware of <br />the outstanding cultural, historical, and recreational resources available in Orange County, <br />travel and tourism will become an increasingly important aspect in the lives of our residents; and <br />WHEREAS, given these laudable contributions to the economic, social, and cultural well being <br />of the residents of Orange County, it is fitting that we recognize the efforts of the Chapel <br />HilllOrange County Visitors Bureau and the importance of travel and tourism; <br />NOW THEREFORE, WE, the Orange County Board of Commissioners da hereby proclaim May <br />8 - 16, 2004 as NATIONAL TOURISM WEEK in Orange County, and we recognize that <br />Tourism Works in Orange County. <br />This the 20t" day of April 2004 <br />VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br />Commissioner Carey said that they have a new Executive Director at the Visitor's <br />Bureau and he hopes that she will came soon to meet the Board. <br />c. Orange County Senior Games <br />The Board considered proclaiming the week of May 3 through May 27, 2004 as <br />Orange County Senior Games Events Days and encouraging citizens age 55 and over to <br />participate. <br />Karen Berry from the Carrboro Parks and Recreation Department and Orange <br />County's Senior Games Organizer, said that their goals are to promote fitness and good health <br />in those over the age of 55, to provide a competitive recreational experience, to stress the <br />importance of regular exercise throughout life, to provide social opportunities and a spirit of <br />fellowship, and to provide opportunities to qualify for the North Carolina Senior Games State <br />finals. She thanked the Board for its support. <br />A motion was made by Commissioner Carey, seconded by Commissioner Halkiotis <br />to proclaim the week of May 3 through May 27, 2004 as Orange County Senior Games Events <br />Days as stated below and to encourage citizens age 55 and aver to participate and authorize <br />the Chair to sign. <br />PROCLAMATION <br />Orange County Senior Games <br />
