county agencies in North Carolina, and has helped lead the effort to provide <br />assistance to the small farmers of North Carolina; and <br />WHEREAS, Stanley B. Hughes has been actively engaged in farming on land owned for <br />nearly 100 years by the Hughes and Tapp families to enrich the agrarian <br />harmony of Orange County, provided sustenance for family and served as a <br />model of farming success, as well as tends his land with dedication, commitment, <br />appreciation, determination and love; and <br />WHEREAS, Stanley B. Hughes has been recognized by the Cooperative Extension program <br />at North Carolina A&T State University with the Gilmer L. and Clara Y. Dudley <br />Small Farmer of the Year Award for his willingness to try alternative agricultural <br />techniques, for his success at making them work, for his community networking <br />and leadership, and for using Cooperative Extension programs to stay abreast of <br />developing farm technologies; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Orange County Board of Commissioners <br />recognizes Stanley B. Hughes on his receipt of the 2004 GILMER L. AND CLARA Y. DUDLEY <br />SMALL FARMER OF THE YEAR award and bestows gratitude to Stanley B. Hughes far his <br />many years of farming and commitment, cooperation and collaborative services to the citizens <br />of Orange County through the Cooperative Extension Service. <br />This the 20t" day of April 2004. <br />VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br />b. National Tourism Week <br />The Board considered proclaiming the week of May 8 through May 16 as National <br />Tourism Week in Orange County and authorizing the Chair to sign the proclamation on behalf of <br />the Board. <br />Patti Griffin, Communications Manager of the Chapel Hill-Orange County Visitor's <br />Bureau thanked the Board for proclaiming the week of May 8-16 as National Tourism Week in <br />Orange County. She said that domestic tourism generated an economic impact of <br />$111,000,000 in Orange County in 2002. They want to encourage Orange County citizens to be <br />tourists in their own backyard and to explore all the great attractions, shopping, and dining in <br />Orange County. They are again partnering with the Chapel Hill News to develop a special <br />tourism insert that will appear in the May 5`" newspaper. The insert will also be posted in <br />various areas in the County. This year they will highlight the Town of Hillsborough's 250t" <br />anniversary. <br />A motion was made by Commissioner Gordon, seconded by Commissioner Carey to <br />proclaim the week May 8 through May 16 as National Tourism Week in Orange County and <br />authorize the Chair to sign the proclamation on behalf of the Board as stated below: <br />NATIONAL TOURISM WEEK PROCLAMATION <br />May 8-16, 2004 <br />WHEREAS, the travel and tourism industry supports the vital interests of Orange County <br />contributing to our employment, economic prosperity, understanding, and goodwill; and <br />
