Chair Jacobs asked if Commissioner Carey would share his comments and <br />Commissioner Carey said that he would at a later date. <br />Commissioner Halkiotis said that he would like to take a proactive stance for a woman <br />from Honduras living in Durham who came here to be with her father. He knows that there have <br />been some efforts to deport her. She is a 12-13 year-old girl and he asked staff to put together <br />a resolution for the next meeting. <br />Commissioner Halkiotis said that DOT is beginning work on the final leg of the <br />Lawrence Road paving and bridge replacement. <br />Commissioner Halkiotis said that he would like the Manager's office to take immediate <br />steps to deal with a safety situation around the old courthouse. He saw the Clerk of Court trip <br />on a loose stone on the sidewalk opposite the new courthouse. He would like to put in some <br />kind of temporary reattachment of the stones with some orange cones until the sidewalks can <br />be fixed permanently. John Link said that the staff would address this. <br />Commissioner Brown said that last week there was a Latino Roundtable meeting and it <br />was an extremely good meeting and the agencies networked very well. There were 50-70 <br />people there and this was the second annual meeting. Also, an organization called CALDO <br />{Comite de Asuntos Latinos de Orange, which translates to the Orange County Committee on <br />Latino Issues} has been formed. This is an umbrella group for a lot of the services provided to <br />the Latino community. She would like to get a report on this organization and how they are <br />providing services and supporting non-profits, etc. <br />Commissioner Brawn asked if Commissioner Carey could provide information about the <br />recommendation to take away the classification of "assault against women". She remembers <br />fighting to have this designation many years ago. This is in regards to the criminal justice issue. <br />Commissioner Carey said that he had not heard that it was going to change, but he would like to <br />ask staff to research this. <br />Commissioner Brown asked John Link about the information about Smart Start and the <br />daycare funding that has been lost and how Orange County is providing the supplement for this. <br />She asked far updated information on this issue. She knows that the County has lost a third of <br />its funding for this. <br />Commissioner Brown distributed information about the comparison of property tax rates <br />for Durham, Wake, Chatham, and Orange Counties. She said that Orange County's valuation <br />of the same house value is about $20Q mare because Orange County does provide better <br />services such as schools, 911 services, Sheriff's Department, etc. Many people say that this is <br />taa much, but she said that Orange County is very careful about how it spends the taxpayers' <br />money. The source of this information was the Orange County Tax office. <br />Chair Jacobs said that yesterday, there was aseven-hour meeting for the selection of <br />architects for the justice facilities expansion in Hillsborough and the group hopes to have a <br />recommendation at one of our next two meetings. <br />Chair Jacobs attended the bi-monthly meeting of the Rural Planning Organization <br />{RPO} and they received a presentation from DOT about school traffic design. He said that this <br />fits in with some of the County's Planning. He said that there might be some opportunity for <br />collaboration between schools, Planning, and DOT. <br />Chair Jacobs said that he met with People for Progress from the Buckhorn Road area <br />and they are very appreciative of what the Board of County Commissioners has done in regards <br />to the sewer line, but they had complaints about Buckhorn Road. He would like more <br />information at the next meeting about the food establishments that are apparently being run on <br />the side of the road without running water. He said that it might be good to set up another <br />meeting with DOT so that they can discuss the issues with the flea market, parking, etc. <br />Chair Jacobs said that the grand opening of the Cedar Grove Library is on April 21St at <br />5:30 p.m. <br />
