Our clients
have included governments at the municipal, county and
state levels, as well as a majority of state universities, and
specifically the Orange County Government.
Designing in the public realm is different than working for
a private entity in numerous ways. Public work requires a
much more open, inclusive process throughout the design
process. It also requires a long -term perspective and an
emphasis on using the public funds wisely and efficiently.
CRA has led master planning efforts on many local public
projects including Chapel Hill's Town Operations Center,
Durham Tech's Orange County Campus and NCSU's
Recreational Sports Master Plan. On each of these
projects, input from many different stakeholders was
essential to producing a responsive and effective solution.
From elected officials to interested citizens to neighbors of
the site in question, a master plan needs to address issues at
all levels. For many years, CRA has worked in this
fashion, being inclusive of all voices and being responsive
to the issues and concerns provided.
Public institutions should build for the long term and
should be good stewards of public funds. An effective
master plan will provide the parameters for development
into the future while also giving flexibility should those
parameters change over time. CRA has used these basic
tenants as the basis of its master planning and design work
for the public realm.
Southern Orange Campus Master Plan Page 19
