WHEREAS, the Orange County Rape Crisis Center, anon-profit, volunteer agency, which has <br />been serving this community since 1974, is commemorating 30 years of working to stop sexual <br />violence and its impact through support, education and advocacy; <br />NOW THEREFORE do we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, hereby proclaim the <br />month of April 2004 as "SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH" in Orange County and <br />encourage all citizens to speak out against sexual assault and support their local communities' <br />efforts to provide services to victims of this heinous crime. <br />This the 13t" day of April 2004. <br />VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br />Ms. Cason said that it is a privilege to accept this proclamation on behalf of the Orange County <br />Rape Crisis Center. This year is their 30t" anniversary. She thanked the Board of County <br />Commissioners for accepting an art piece to hang in the Southern Human Services Center for a <br />year and said that their work could not be done without the many volunteers (143). Last year <br />they served 455 clients, and provided 453 programs to a total of over 9,500 people. <br />d. Fair Housing Month <br />The Board considered a proclamation recognizing April 2004 as Fair Housing Month <br />and authorizing the Chair to sign. <br />David Stiles of the HRR Commission spoke about the events taking place this <br />month. Commissioner Carey read the proclamation. <br />A motion was made by Commissioner Carey, seconded by Commissioner Brown to <br />proclaim April 2004 as Fair Housing Month as stated below and authorize the Chair to sign. <br />A PROCLAMATION <br />FAIR HOUSING 1VIONTH <br />WHEREAS, April, 2004 marks the thirty-sixth anniversary of the Federal Fair Housing Act of <br />1964 and the 21st anniversary of the North Carolina Fair Housing Act prohibiting <br />discrimination in housing on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, nafiona! origin, <br />handicap and familial status; and <br />
