WHEREAS, American women have been leaders, not only in securing their own rights <br />of suffrage and equal opportunity, but also in the abolitionist movement, the emancipation <br />movement, the industrial labor movement, the civil rights movement, and other movements, <br />especially the peace movement, which create a more fair and just society for all; and <br />WHEREAS, despite these contributions, the role of American women in history has <br />been consistently overlooked and undervalued, in the literature, teaching and study of American <br />history; and <br />WHEREAS, the Orange County Board of County Commissioners on March 25, 1976, <br />established the Orange County Commission for Women to promote the growth and <br />development of all Orange County women and the Commission has been doing that for more <br />than 25 years; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, do we, the Board of Commissioners of Orange County, North <br />Carolina hereby proclaim March 2004 as "Women's History Month" and commend this <br />observance to Orange County residents. <br />THIS THE 4t" DAY OF MARCH, 2004. <br />VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br />Chair Jacobs pointed out that of Orange County employees, 55°~ are female. <br />b. Severe Weather Awareness Week <br />The Board considered designating the week of March 14 through 20, 2004 as <br />Severe Weather Awareness Week in Orange County and encouraging residents to learn more <br />about severe weather preparedness. <br />Emergency Management Specialist Eric Griffin said that March through May is the <br />most likely time for the County to experience severe weather. He made reference to the <br />brochure, Funnel Facts. Media services are also providing safety tips. He explained a tornado <br />watch and tornado warning. Their office has distributed 475 NOAA weather radios to public <br />facilities in the County. These radios automatically activate in the event of a weather warning by <br />the National Weather Service. He encouraged all citizens to purchase these radios. Most <br />electronic stores have the radios far about $40. Also, public schools throughout the State will <br />be holding tornado drills as part of the severe awareness week. <br />A motion was made by Commissioner Carey, seconded by Commissioner Gordon to <br />approve and authorize the Chair to sign the proclamation as stated below designating the week <br />of March 14 through 20, 2004 as Severe Weather Awareness Week in Orange County and <br />encouraging residents to learn more about severe weather preparedness. <br />A PROCLAMATION <br />SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK <br />March 14 through 20, 2Q04 <br />
