WHEREAS, the County recognizes the dignity and worth of each individual and desires <br />to promote and maintain equality and good will among individuals, races, ethnic groups and <br />persons of varying social, religious and economic status, ancestry, sexual orientation, marital <br />status or status with regard to public assistance; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, We, The Board of County Commissioners of Orange County, North <br />Carolina, da hereby proclaim February 2004 as "HUMAN RELATIONS MONTH" in Orange <br />County and challenge our citizens to celebrate multiculturalism in our county by encouraging <br />citizens to embrace our diversity. <br />THIS THE 3'~d DAY of FEBRUARY, 2004. <br />VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br />b. One Book One Community Proiect <br />The Board received information on the One Book One Community Project and <br />considered a resolution challenging residents to participate in the One Book One Community <br />Project. <br />Barbara Chatman and Commissioner Gordan read the proclamation together. <br />A motion was made by Commissioner Halkiotis, seconded by Commissioner Carey <br />to approve and authorize the Chair to sign the resolution as stated below: <br />ONE-BOOK ONE-COMMUNITY PROJECT <br />RESOLUTION OF SUPPORT <br />WHEREAS, the Orange County Human Relations Commission received amini-grant from the <br />North Carolina Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission to provide partial funding of <br />activities that foster and promote the legacy and philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther <br />King, Jr.; and <br />WHEREAS, the Orange County Human Relations Commission implemented aONE-COMMUNITY <br />PROJECT which was comprised of two parts: 1) a film screening of the film <br />documentary, An Unlikely Friendship and 2) aONE-BooKONE-COMMUNITY <br />project; and <br />WHEREAS, the goal of the ONE-BooKOHE-COMMUNITY project is to have Orange County <br />residents read a book that has a human relations andlor human rights theme; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, once read, discussion groups will take place that "might start discussion on what's <br />necessary to transform ourselves, to move across racial lines and on how we unlearn what we <br />need to unlearn": and <br />WHEREAS, the book of choice is "Summer Snow: Reflections from a Black Daughter of the <br />South" by Trudier Harris-Lopez, the J. Carlyle Sitterson professor of English at UNC; and <br />WHEREAS, the book can be purchased at the Barnes & Nobles Bookstore at a 20°l° discount <br />and checked out of the local libraries; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Board of County Commissioners of Orange County, North <br />Carolina do resolve: <br />
