ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: January 18, 2001
Action Age a
Item No. --s
SUBJECT: Month-to-Month Lease Extension; ArtsCenter
DEPARTMENT: Purchasing and Central PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No
Services ~
ATTACHMENT(S):
INFORMATION CONTACT:
Pam Jones (919) 245-2652
Jerry Passmore (919) 245-2009
TELEPHONE NUMBERS:
Hillsborough 732-8181
Chapei Hill 968-4501
Durham 688-7331
Mebane 336-227-2031
PURPOSE: To consider extending the lease at the ArtsCenter in Carrboro on a month-to-
month basis; pending the relocation of the Senior Citizens Program to the new Carrboro
Century Center.
BACKGROUND: In June 2000 the Board approved a lease extension for the referenced facility
through December 31, 2000. At that time, Jerry Passmore, Department on Aging Director
believed that the new Carrboro Century Center would be completed and the senior citizens
program could be relocated. The Century Center's completion is taking longer than expected.
The A~tsCenter Executive Director has agreed to allow the senior citizens program to remain
there on a month-to-month basis under the original terms of the lease.
It should be noted, that the renewal approved by the Board in June 2000 allowed for a second
six-month renewal through June 30, 2001. However, according to Jerry Passmore, the
renovations at the Century Center will be completed well in advance of that date. For that
reason it seems advisable to continue the arrangement on a month-to-month basis rather than
to pursue a full six-month lease extension. The Board will be kept apprised of the Century
Center's renovation progress and an agreement for use of the space for senior programs will be
brought back to the Board for approval in the near future.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: The lease is supported through an appropriation in the Department on
Aging operating budget. The current lease amount of $1061 per month will continue.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the continuation
of the lease for space at the Carrboro ArtsCenter for senior programs on a month-to-month
basis; and authorize the Purchasing Director to notify the Executive Director of the Board's
action.
