Task B: Surface and Subsurface Investigation of the Cate Farmstead, Tobacco Barn and Log Cabin Site A team consisting of the Principal Investigator and one Archaeological Technician will conduct the archaeological survey of the proposed construction areas, including areas around the Cate Farmstead house and outbuildings, the log cabins in the eastern portion of the tract, and the tobacco barns near the south entrance driveway. Both surface and subsurface methods will be used as appropriate for the topography and ground cover. This testing will consist of the excavation of systematic and/or strategically placed shovel tests to be determined by the conditions at each location. Sufficient subsurface investigation will be made to determine cultural affiliation, site size and boundaries, integrity, and significance (in terms of eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places [NRHP]) of these resources. Each shovel test will measure about 30-35 cm in diameter, and will be excavated to sterile subsoil or bedrock. All removed soil will be screened through one-quarter-inch mesh hazdwaze cloth to ensure uniform artifact recovery. All artifacts recovered will be bagged by site and intra-site provenience. Each shovel test will be described in terms of depth, stratigraphy, and artifact recovery, and the texture and Munsell soil color of all soils will be recorded. A sketch map of each site will be produced, and the site and its limits will be entered on the project map. The location of each shovel test will be placed on the site sketch map, and notes will be maintained on the soil profiles and artifact content of each shovel test. Each site will be photogaphed in black and white print and color slide formats, and general notes will be taken concerning site location and condition. Task C: Field Reconnaissance for Remainder of the Property The reconnaissance of the remainder of the project tract will be conducted by a surface inspection along transects spaced 30 m apart. As requested in the RFP, this task will not involve a systematic shovel testing program; however, limited shovel testing will be performed in selected areas. This reconnaissance level of investigation will provide data regarding all above ground structures, including cemeteries. This coverage will allow the development of a model predicting the potential for the presence of intact azchaeological sites within the tract and gather sufficient data to complete a site form for any sites identified. The level of effort, however, may not result in an identification of all significant archaeological resources within the project tract or in definitive deternunations regarding the eligibility of all of the identified resources. Recommendations on the potential need for further survey will be included in the final report. Future reseazch in these areas will be commissioned at the discretion of the Orange County ERCD. Any marked cemeteries in the survey area will be recorded, but they will not be probed to determine boundaries or the number of graves present. Any cemetery delineations that may be required aze beyond the scope of this proposal, although we can perform these services under a separate scope of work if necessary. If unmarked human burials or skeletal remains are found, the Orange County ERCD will be notified immediately; the proper authorities will then be notified according to the provisions of North Carolina G.S. 70, Article 3, The Unmarked Human Burial and Skeletal Remains Protection Act. Task 3: Reporting of Results Once the fieldwork is completed, the recovered artifacts will be returned to TRC's Durham facility for processing. The artifacts will be cleaned and catalogued, and the artifact collection from each site will be studied to deternune the date or dates of occupations present and the range of activities carried out at each site. The vertical and horizontal distributions of the materials from each site will be studied so that the nature and extent of the site can be better understood. Page - 2
