14
Draft Orange County Transit Plan FAQ
A7: High capacity transit investrnents like commuter rail are typically built in
corridors with higher transit demand than can be served effectively with standard
bus service. While Hillsborough currently meets the criteria for an intercity rail
station for scheduled Amtrak trains that arrive a few times per day, it does not
presently have the population or travel demand to warrant commuter rail service
that is presently warranted between Durham and Garner via Cary and Raleigh.
However, the commuter rail system between Durham and Garner is being
designed to accommodate the possibility of future extensions to the east and
west, including Hillsborough. To the extent that travel demand from the greater
Hillsborough area increases in the future to levels that suggest commuter rail is
feasible, commuter rail service could then be extended to Hillsborough at a future
date.
