This particular count does not take <br /> 15 into account people living in institutions, including dormitories. <br /> 16 Discussion ensued about how it is tedious to figure out the poverty level when <br /> 17 there are so many students in the area. <br /> 18 Commissioner McKee said that his concern is that this will take focus away from <br /> 19 the people that the County should be serving. <br /> 20 <br /> 21 Albert Williams with the DSS Board arrived at 5:52 PM. <br /> 22 The NC FAST online program should be ready by September. The staff is being <br /> 23 trained at this time. This has been promised for about 10-15 years. <br /> 24 <br /> 25 4. Success Stories <br /> 26 Denise Shaffer shared some success stories. She said that with some Smart <br /> 27 Start funds, they were able to clear the waiting list for child care. <br /> 28 Regarding Child Welfare, there is a significant difference in the number of <br /> 29 children in custody. It is usually about 135-150 and it is now around 100 children as of <br /> 30 January. <br /> 31 The County was also able to assist in funding for housing for residents in need. <br /> 32 Sharron Hinton continued highlighting the various programs of Social Services. <br /> 33 <br /> 34 5. Hot Topics <br /> 35 Nancy Coston went through the Hot Topics. Social Services is looking at a better <br /> 36 way to work out the community drug court. <br /> 37 Regarding Medicaid Transportation, the Social Services was told last year that <br /> 38 there would be an RFP put out for a private provider <br /> 39 Regarding guardianships, Mental Health is going to be transferring effective April <br /> 40 1 st to Social Services. <br /> 41 Commissioner Yuhasz asked if this would require new or different staff. Nancy <br /> 42 Coston said that this is happening right now. <br /> 43 Nancy Coston said that there is some unpleasant budget information <br /> 44 forthcoming. The TANF grant is a $302,000,000 block grant for North Carolina. It is <br /> 45 primarily used for Work First and child care.
