It is not a formal report of the Institute of Government, <br />nor is it the work of School of Government faculty. <br />Counties have no legal responsibility for fire protection. However, there are various state <br />statutes that outline legal requirements and options if a county chooses to provide this <br />service. This briefing memo summarizes these. It also includes background information <br />on fire service provision in several comparison North Carolina counties. <br />
