If the residents have been building these <br />landfills for several years, then unsettling the landfills could discharge toxic gases and <br />chemicals. The County would be liable for the harmful health effects, which could be attributed <br />to the release of these gases and chemicals if not properly contained or remediated. <br />Damage to environment: If the environment surrounding the illegal landfills, including soil, <br />surface and groundwater, has not already been contaminated, the remediation and restoration <br />efforts could contaminate or aggravate any existing environmental conditions.
