57 <br />What are your Board/Commission's most important accomplishments? <br />1. Received a presentation from James E. Williams, Jr. of the Orange County Public <br />Defender Office regarding sentencing disparity in the criminal justice system and <br />social justice <br />2. Organized and sponsored the 2011 Human Relations Month Kickoff Event which <br />was a panel discussion entitled: "A Community Conversation on Immigration: What <br />Are the Implications for Orange County and its Residents." The panelists included <br />Cristina Marcela Rivera, a Salvadorian native; Marty Rosenbluth, an immigration <br />attorney; Zaragosa Vargas, UNC-CH Kenan Distinguished Professor of History; and <br />Keenon James, Director of Special Projects for the N. C. Sheriffs' Association. <br />3. Completed the final, formatted draft of the Social Justice Goal Impact Review Tool <br />(SJGIRT). The SJGIRT is to be used in concert with the BOCC-adopted Social <br />Justice Goals. <br />4. Engaged in discussion with members of the Burmese community regarding their <br />experience and concerns as residents of Orange County. <br />5. Participated in the US Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD's) <br />survey and/or pall regarding HUD's efforts to ensuring equal access to housing for <br />members of the LGBT community. <br />6. Met with Rev. Robert Campbell and David Caldwell regarding the three staff- <br />proposed Landfill Capacity Options to the BOCC regarding the landfill and the <br />Rogers Road community. <br />7. Adopted a resolution requesting the BOCC to expeditiously and with sensitivity <br />address the necessities of life issues of the Rogers Road Community while <br />considering the staff-proposed Landfill Capacity Options <br />8. Began discussion of the housing needs for people suffering with Severe to <br />Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI), including Autism. <br />9. Entered into collaboration with the UNC School of Government known as the <br />"Building Integrated Communities" initiative. The anticipated goal of this <br />collaborative effort is to ensure that all the diverse ethnic and immigrant communities <br />in Orange County have equal access to and understanding of available resources <br />within the County. <br />10. In October 2011, recommended that the BOCC take appropriate steps to amend the <br />Orange County Civil Rights Ordinance to include sexual orientation and sexual <br />identity as protected classes and further recommended that this matter be included <br />on the agenda of Orange County Legislative Delegation for the next legislative <br />session <br />11.In October 2011, adopted a resolution encouraging the BOCC to re-affirm its <br />commitment to social justice, equal rights and equal opportunity for all residents of <br />Orange County and to voice opposition to the proposed Amendment 1 to the North <br />Carolina Constitution which would prohibit marriage between people of the same <br />gender, and further prohibit the recognition of any other form of domestic legal <br />union. <br />12. Began planning the 2012 Human Relations Month Kick-Off event which will focus on <br />
