54 <br />Priority 16: (a) ...Conduct public education campaign; and Link public with <br />opportunities to improve energy efficiency and use sustainable energy <br />sources. <br />• For the last three years, the focus of the HPC's Last Friday's booth during <br />preservation month has been historic preservation and green building, <br />including information on how to improve the energy efficiency of existing <br />buildings in a way that retains their historic significance. (The May Last <br />Friday's event was cancelled this year due to inclement weather; the HPC <br />intends to operate an informational booth again next year.) <br />If your board/commission played the role of an Element Lead Advisory Board <br />involved in the 2030 Comprehensive Plan preparation process, please indicate <br />your board's activities/accomplishments as they may relate to the <br />Comprehensive Plan's goals or objectives. <br />(The Element .Lead Advisory Boards include: Planning Board, EDC, OUTBoard, <br />Commission for the Environment, Historic Preservation Commission, Agriculture <br />Preservation Board, Affordable Housing Board, Recreation and Parks Advisory Council) <br />• The HPC provided extensive input into DEAPR staff's development of the Natural <br />and Cultural System Element of the Comprehensive Plan-specifically the <br />chapter on Cultural and Historic Resources. The HPC frames its annual work <br />plan around efforts to implement the objectives outlined in the Cultural and <br />Historic Resources Chapter. <br />Objective CR-1: <br />Provide for the systematic identification of historic buildings, objects, districts, sites, <br />structures and archaeological sites. Update and improve these inventories at <br />regular intervals. <br />• Information regarding the identification of newly discovered historic resources <br />and the loss of existing resources are documented as part of the Certified Local <br />Government program annual reports. <br />• The HPC is also involved in the identification and protection of cultural resources <br />below ground, and continues to promote an understanding and appreciation of <br />the importance of archaeological resources. <br />Objective CR-3: <br />Work within the Orange County government system to identify and resolve existing <br />policies which may be in conflict with the County's historic preservation mission. <br />• The HPC and associated staff (DEAPR) has already begun working more closely <br />with Planning and Inspections staff (as well as Environmental Health staff) on <br />permitting requirements for historic properties such as the Murphey School and <br />cemetery issues related to development, as well as the identification and <br />protection of archaeological resources during construction projects. <br />
