21
• A volunteer service corps to do spay/neuter outreach in targeted
neighborhoods and provide transportation for spay/neuter services.
Marketing & Outreach: Work with staff to develop additional and better outreach
and marketing opportunities. Continue to contact civic and community
organizations to explore partnerships for increasing adoption and spay/neuter
outreach. Consider county-wide public awareness campaigns promoting
adoption over pet purchases; importance of spay neuter and Increasing cat
awareness (in regard to both adoption and the recovery of strays). With respect
to departmental partnership, there is also a need to recruit more fence-building
volunteers for the Coalition to Unchain Dogs new Orange County Chapter.
Overall increase of animal placement numbers remains a departmental goal.
Staff and board members continue to strive for opportunities, such as creative
photos of adoptable pets, in order to achieve such goals and increase positive
awareness for the department and its adoptable animals. Consider incorporating
adoption success stories in yearly celebration, including an event where people
could bring their newly-adopted pets to celebrate and highlight successful
adoptions.
Volunteer Program: Work with staff to further grow and enhance the
department's volunteer program. Consider merits of acquiring appropriate
volunteer management software; a volunteer information kiosk; a volunteer of the
month program, increased volunteers for cat enrichment and socialization.
Cat Sheltering: Cat sheltering will be a standing item on the ASAB meeting
agenda for the foreseeable future. In this way, the ASAB can continue to hear
community concerns and work with staff as they consider changes in cat
sheltering standards. The ASAB may also make recommendations where
appropriate, and more specifically, concerning the possibility of restructuring
existing cat enclosures to create larger ones.
Other: Other areas of interest include improvements to the department's
website, especially in the area of adoptions and volunteers. A public suggestion
box is another goal for the year. Also, consider the. role of education about
responsible pet ownership in the existing adoption process. Lastly is the
recruitment of community artists and art for fundraising purposes and events.
