14 <br />Objective AG-5: <br />Teach the next generation about farming, support apprentice options, and promote <br />the pursuit of farming as an occupation. <br />• APB members participated in a new afternoon session for the annual Agricultural <br />Summit (2010) geared toward helping new farmers understand the business <br />component of farming. <br />• Questions in the Agricultural Survey focused on teaching young farmers through <br />internships and mentorships. <br />• Invited a graduate of the PLANT program to come to a APB meeting to discuss <br />challenges for new farmers and possible solutions <br />Objective AG-1: <br />Recognize and support the right to farm. Protect farm operations from incompatible <br />adjacent land uses or activities that will adversely affect the long-term agricultural <br />investment in land and improvements, <br />• Work with the Animal Services Department to ensure that the local animal control <br />ordinance is farmer friendly. <br />Objective AG-4: <br />Minimize the negative impacts of future public projects on farming operations and <br />productive farmland. Conduct public review of projects proposed by entities that <br />have the power of eminent domain, and consider the impact of such actions on <br />agricultural activity. <br />• The APB completed the Agricultural Development and Farmland Protection Plan, <br />adopted in 2009. <br />• Prepared amendments (2009) to the VFPO to allow for the creation of EVADS <br />and lower the acreage requirement for enrollment in VADs and EVADs. <br />Continue to promote the VAD and EVAD programs and recommend new farms <br />for designation in the program. <br />Objective AG-9: <br />Encourage Farmers to continue to be model environmental stewards and promote <br />good forest stewardship management practices using state and federal programs <br />that provide financial assistance. <br />• Completed the Agricultural Development and Farmland Protection Plan. <br />Identify any activities this board/commission expects to carry out in 2011 as they <br />relate to established BOCC goals and priorities. <br />If applicable, is there a fiscal impact (i.e., funding, staff time, other resources) <br />associated with these proposed activities (please list). <br />Several of the First Year Action Steps in the Agricultural Development and Farmland <br />Protection Plan (Farm Plan) pertain to the BOCC Goals and Priorities as explained <br />below: <br />
