The planning also assumes that the <br />station will be a multi-modal hub that serves express buses from I-40 to the east, as well as a <br />major park-and-ride center. <br />• The University has undertaken preliminary planning for the Friday Center property on the <br />assumption that a station will be located there. <br />Conclusion <br />The regional rail plan, and its feasibility, hinges on high density, transit-oriented development occurring <br />at many of the stations. Much of this development will be undertaken by the private sector, and in some <br />cases appropriate development has commenced, has been planned, or is in the planning phases. In <br />making financial commitments, developers and their financial backers need to be assured that an <br />alignment formally adopted by local governments will not be retracted. <br />ADDITIONAL FACTORS <br />There are several additional factors that favor remaining in the NC 54 corridor, though these do not <br />preclude the US 15-501 corridor as an option. It also should be noted, however, that Alignment 3 is <br />approximately two miles shorter than the NC 54 options, thus potentially providing some cost savings, <br />and Alignment 3 also may have the least impacts on the natural environment: Regardless, these <br />4 <br />
