COMPUTER GENERATED MAPS
The overall response capability of the County fire and rescue response system
is measured by the development of computer maps. The computer mapping model
analyzes the travel distances that can be achieved by fire units leaving fire stations
and responding throughout a geographic area within a given time, assuming defined
average response speeds. The color-coded maps presented in this report are designed
to illustrate the response from each station.
The mapping methodology consists of the following steps:
- Prepare a digitized base map representation of the street and highway
network in Orange County. The maps were based on mapping data from
the County's GIS Department.
- Locate the fire stations to be analyzed with respect to the network.
- Assign appropriate road speeds to reflect reasonable response
expectations.
- Generate maps indicating distances from the emergency response stations
in two-mile increments to the borders of the community.
