Orange County Emergency Management, North Carolina
Final VIPER Anal sis Re ort Au ust 20, 2004
VIPER sites outside of the county providing coverage support in Orange County
are shown in the maps as follows:
• D-Cane Mtn. (Cane Mountain) in Alamance County
• C-Durham City (Durham) in Durham County
• C-Butner (Butner) in Durham County
• C-RTP ETV (Research Triangle Park) in Durham County
NC-SHP has stated the following sites shown on the coverage maps will not be
constructed.
• D-Burlington in Alamance County
• C-NC-55 in Wake County
• C-Durham/MI in Durham County
Users in Orange County operating portable radios should experience good on-the-
street coverage throughout the county, except in the West Central, and
Northeastern portions of the county depicted in blue and red on FIGURE 4-1.
FIGURE 4-2 with 0 dB gain provides an indication of coverage expected in light
buildings up to 6 dB loss when compared to FIGURE 4-1. Users operating in the
close proximity to the VIPER sites (yellow high signal areas) should have
sufficient RF signal margin to communicate in medium density buildings having
higher loss than light buildings. This is based on the assumption all planned
VIPER sites are operational and constructed using the same parameters as used in
the coverage map predictions.
4.2 Traffic Loading
In observing the usage of trunked radio systems installed by each of the major
vendors, we have found that communications systems serving public safety
operations have predictable use patterns and loading requirements.
The remainder of this section discusses traffic loading as it relates to public safety
support functions.
"``°_ Section 4 -VIPER Coverage and Capacity
Page 13 of 43
