Density Map:Attachment 1 <br /> Connectivity Test <br /> - Library staff performed field tests using 4 laptops and mobile hotspot from Sprint and <br /> Verizon <br /> o Conducted tests using the Sprint hotspot on 5/5 and 5/6 <br /> o Conducted tests using the Verizon hotspot on 5/25 and 5/26 <br /> - At each site, we timed the ability of the computer to completely load and/or begin <br /> playing: <br /> o The county homepage (co.orange.nc.us) <br /> o A county job posting in PDF format <br /> o An archived BOCC meeting video from May 3, 2011 <br /> - Testing consisted of completing all three steps on each laptop in succession. When <br /> laptop 4 was tested all previous laptops were still connected and attempting to run the <br /> Granicus video. <br /> Connectivity Results <br /> - Main Library wireless was used as a benchmark for test sites because it is designed to <br /> handle a large number of users effectively <br /> - At certain sites, utilizing the mobile hotspot from both providers yielded: <br /> o Limited and inconsistent connectivity <br /> o Limited ability to stream video <br /> o Compromised connection with the addition of more than one computer <br /> - Verizon hotspot yielded results comparable to the Main Library wireless at 3 of 7 test <br /> sites <br /> - Attachments 2 & 3 provide data of testing <br /> Connectivity Alternatives based on Collaborative Discussions with IT and Planning <br /> - Alternative 1: Create Broadband Wireless Hotpots <br /> o Establish business-class broadband connections and wireless routers at select <br /> sites throughout rural Orange for$7,200 annually for 6 sites <br /> o Requires existing coverage by service providers and cooperative agreement <br /> with facility owners which may include rental fees <br /> Connectivity Alternatives based on Collaborative Discussions with IT and Planning <br /> - Alternative 2: Encourage Expansion of Private Sector Cellular Service <br /> o Relies on private providers siting towers in rural Orange <br /> o Extent of impact will depend on the location of new towers <br /> o Additional information presented by Planning at May 17, 2011 BOCC meeting: <br /> http://www.co.oranqe.nc.us/OCCLERKS/1105177b.pdf <br /> Connectivity Alternatives based on Collaborative Discussions with IT and Planning <br /> - Alternative 3: Expand County Network through Point-to-Point Wireless <br /> o Cooperative agreements with the NC Highway patrol, Town of Hillsborough, <br /> Hillsborough Historic Commission and other bodies must be established <br /> o Requires $100K IT capital and $10K in annual IT maintenance per tower, and a <br /> minimum of 12 months to implement <br /> o Dovetails with expressed need for improved public safety communications <br />
