BOARD COMMENTS <br />Commissioner Jacobs made reference to the plaque that Orange and Durham Counties received <br />as the Local Government Conservationists of the year 2Q01 presented by the North Carolina Land Trust <br />Council and the Conservation Trust of North Carolina. This award was a result of our cooperative <br />venture with Triangle Land Conservancy and the Eno River Association on the purchase of the land far <br />the Little River Park. Orange County is going to share this particular award with Durham County until the <br />Land Trust makes another copy. He and Rich Shaw attended the presentation. <br />Commissioner Jacobs asked staff about the message in Spanish that was removed from the main <br />phone line. He would rather designate one person in County government that can answer rudimentary <br />questions. John Link said that County staff is trying to implement a procedure whereby the message will <br />connect the caller with someone who can speak Spanish. <br />Chair Halkiotis made reference to EI Centro and said that they would probably be willing to help in <br />some way. <br />Chair Halkiotis said that he went to a funeral the other day for Bernice Wilson. She was the lead <br />social worker far the Orange County schools and was 49 years of age. She was a wonderful person and <br />many people loved her. We also lost Alton Cheek from the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School system this <br />year. <br />The County Commissioners congratulated Duke University for winning the NCAA basketball <br />tournament. <br />4. COUNTY MANAGER'S REPORT <br />John Link congratulated Duke University far winning the NCAA basketball tournament and in <br />particular Shane Battier who is a fine example of a young person who exemplifies work, ethics and <br />community spirit. <br />5. RESOLUTIONS/PROCLAMATIONS <br />a. Public Health Month Proclamation <br />The Board considered proclaiming April as Public Health Month. <br />Dr. Jonathan Klein, Chair of the Orange County Health Board, said that the Environmental <br />Health program in the Health Department has been noted by the state as a leader in the state in <br />developing local wastewater and well construction rules. Also, for the past two years the Health <br />Department programs in child health have been recognized by Glaxo Smith Klein in their Child Health <br />Recognition Program. Rebecca Herman was an award winner for her service and advocacy in child <br />services coordination.
