He managed Pirnie's corporate computer facilities and was <br />responsible for the acquisition of computers and data communication facilities for <br />engineering, computer aided design, and accounting/M-t°S systems. As a senior manager <br />for the firm,. he supervised a staff of fourteen engineers, programmers, and computer <br />technicians who assisted with the proiects for which he was responsible and. supported <br />the company's computational facilities. He had complete hiring and management <br />responsibility for his staff and consultants. <br />He has worked on a variety of environmental engineering and computer projects <br />including: -design of industrial and municipal wastewater- treatment systems; sewer and <br />water conveyance systems, and modeling of natural systems. He has co authored and <br />developed software for engineering analysis, water and wastewater treatment; data <br />management; maintenance management, mapping, and numerous other specialized . <br />functions. <br />He returned to graduate school in January 1990 to pursue advanced studies in <br />environmental engineering at the University of North Carolina. As a result of these <br />efforts, he gained' additional computational experience optimizing and parallalizing a <br />three-dimensional finite element groundwater flow modeling code on Cray and Convex <br />computers. <br />DETAILED EXPERIENCE (Recent experience first.) <br />July 2005 to Present -City of Durham, Department of Public Works, Engineering <br />Division; 101 City Hall Plaza, 3rd Floor, Durham, North Carolina 27701, C'-vil Engineer IV/ <br />Design Group Supervisor: <br />Mr. Hughes is supervisor for the Engineering Design and Survey Groups. In this capacity <br />he directly supervises 18 full-time staff consisting of professional engineers and <br />surveyors, survey crew personnel, and engineering design technicians. The group <br />provides street, water, sewer and storm water design services for projects which are <br />constructed with City funds, as well as survey. services for other City Divisions. The <br />group designs about $7,000,000 (installed cost) of improvements each year. <br />February 2000 to June 2005Michael M. The engineering firms Malcolm Pirnie,~ Inc, Schnabel Engineers, Inc, and <br />Kimley Horn, Inc. have been sub-consultants on his projects-along with a cadre of <br />structural and soils engineers. The firma€T""s staff has varied from six to twelve <br />employees including his partner Charles S. Wagner, PE, PLS. <br />Under his direction the firm designed and supervised the construction of a number of <br />residential subdivisioris, shopping centers, and town home complexes..
