ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: August 23, 2011
Action Agenda
Item No. j - (1
SUBJECT: County Health Department Restroom and Board of Health Conference Area
Improvement Change Order
DEPARTMENT: Asset Management Services
(AMS), Health Department
PUBLIC HEARING: (YIN) No
ATTACHMENT(S):
Second Level Renovation Plan
INFORMATION CONTACT:
Pam Jones, AMS, (919) 245-2652
Dorothy Cilenti, Health, (919) 245-2412
Jeff Thompson, AMS, (919) 245-2658
PURPOSE: To consider approval of:
• Requested Health Department restroom and Board of Health conference area
improvements located on the second floor of the Whiffed Building "A"; and
• Use of $40,000 in additional Medicare Maximization funds to provide for the requested
construction change orders.
BACKGROUND: The Health and Dental Clinic renovations at the Whiffed Building are almost
complete and have been achieved within the BOCC approved $1,470,000 project budget
approved on December 14, 2010. The project has developed smoothly and is projected to have
a small surplus at its final completion and project closeout. Adequate contingency funds remain
in the project budget through this final close-out scheduled at the end of this month.
The Health Department has requested a modification to its designed 2"d floor administration
offices to include restrooms and an improved Board of Health conference room and classroom
facility (Attachment: "Second Level Renovation Plan"). The current design does not
contemplate new restrooms on the 2"d floor -there have never been restroom facilities on this
level of the building. Use of the Board of Health meeting room as well as use of the classroom
would be significantly enhanced with the addition of restroom facilities on the 2"d floor in this
wing, particularly after hours since current facilities are located within departmental space and
are only accessible during business hours.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: Should the BOCC approve the Health Department's request for these
enhancements, the project will require an additional $40,000 of additional Medicare
Maximization funds for the renovation project. Should the existing project contingencies not be
needed to close out the project, a portion of these additional funds may not be necessary to
complete the additional request.
