' 1. ABOUT THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF ORANGE COUNTY, INC. (HSOC) <br />General Company Information Respondents are requested to provide information about the company association etc. submitting the proposal. <br />Examples of relevant information includes but is not limited to' your corporate standing f501 C-3) corporation partnership etc.) financial resources <br />to carry out the scope of the work contained herein and any other information that you want considered dunnq the evaluation of these proposals. <br />Specifically include a statement of your philosophical approach to shelter management a-ven the parameters and restnct~ons of the <br />shelter itself. <br />From the Humane Society of Orange County Bylaws: <br />Mission Statement: <br />The purpose of this organization shall be the prevention of cruelty to animals and the relief of suffering <br />among animals; fhe investigation of cruelty reports; the care of lost, homeless, mistreated or injured <br />animals; the operation of an animal shelter, privately or under contract with public authorities; the <br />development of strategies for reducing pet overpopulation; the establishment of an adoption system for <br />people seeking pets; the development of effective and humane animal control programs in North Carolina; <br />and public education for the humane treatment of animals. <br />The HSOC was formed as a focus group to assist dealing with problems and solutions for <br />shelters, especially the OCAS. It is a registered not-for-profit organization and an application for <br />501 c3 status has been filed. The HSOC federal identification number is 20-0301313. <br />The Board of Directors has extensive contacts with citizens of Orange County, and they will <br />be able to solicit donations for the OCAS operations. The donations during the first year will <br />undoubtedly be in the form of in-kind donations-volunteerism, professional services and material <br />goods. HSOC is asking that Orange County provide the costs of operating the OCAS in exchange <br />for professional oversight of the programs. <br />Each Board Member has had extensive experience in active volunteerism and/or <br />management in animal shelters and is knowledgeable of animal welfare issues. A short resume of <br />each Board Member is given below. <br />Dean Edwards has been Director at two animal shelters and has served as Associate Director <br />of the APS in Orange County for three and a half years. He is a statewide leader in animal <br />issues and programs. Edwards is currently on the Steering Committee of the NC Task force <br />Against Animal Fighting and the chair of its Legislative Committee, working with the Humane <br />Society of the United States. He has served as an Orange and Durham County <br />Commissioner-appointed Cruelty Investigator. Edwards is certified by HSUS in many areas of <br />shelter operation, as well as Shelter Renovation and Design. He was one of the charter <br />shelter leaders chosen nationwide to be trained in the extensive Pets for Life Program, <br />designed to lower the number of animals coming into shelters.
