4. a .DISEASE PREVENTION
Disease Prevention (e.g., describe in detail the housing by category of and animal and specific
procedures for disease control.)
Disease prevention is one of the most complicated and important issues in successfully
operating an animal shelter. Following is a list of policies that will be employed to
address these concerns:
1. Animals will be assessed upon arrival to determine obvious health problems.
2. Vaccinations and a complete initial health check will be completed within 24 hours of
arrival. The goal is to have all animals done by day's end of their arrival; however this may
not be possible for animals arriving late in the day. So, 24 hours is the maximum
completion time.
3. Animals that display illness will be separated from the healthy population immediately.
4. HSOC will take into account the recommendations of HSUS and will also consider
accepted practices by leading shelters all over the country. All policies will be reviewed by
the Veterinarian.
5. Staff will be fully trained by a Veterinarian and Management in accepted shelter disease
prevention policies and procedures.
6. Medical attention to treat diseased animals will follow the Veterinarian's recommendations
and will be carried out by trained staff.
7. Utilization of proper sanitation substances, and their correct application in cleaning, will be
closely monitored by management to insure compliance at all times.
8. If an animal with an adoption deposit becomes ill, the potential adopter will be notified and
given the option of choosing another animal. A final health check will be done before
surgery to assess the animal's health status before it goes home.
9. Despite best efforts, it is still possible that an animal may be developing an illness that goes
undetected and doesn't appear until the animal has already left the shelter. Adopters will
be educated on diseases common to shelter animals and will be required to see their own
Veterinarian within 21 days of adoption. This will enable their vet to diagnose and treat any
unforeseen illness immediately.
26
