VOLUNTEERS (continued)
We do not believe it is possible to have too many volunteers--all those interested in being
volunteers and who successfully complete volunteer training will have their skills and motivation
utilized! Because of people's schedules, we anticipate that there will be more individuals
interested in volunteering on weekends rather than weekdays. Where possible, we will organize
our volunteer tasks accordingly (e.g., trying to fill the adoption schedules for weekends so that
volunteers will be able to do them.) We will ask a minimum commitment of volunteers of a 3-hour
block of time every two weeks. Our goal is to build up a volunteer corps where hours and tasks
are relatively stable--this will enable the volunteers to become "experts" in their own right as to the
work they do. They will also develop a rapport with the staff members who are usually working
during their particular time slot.
Our team of Executive Director and HSOC Board Members has well over 50 years experience in
training volunteers and doing shelter volunteer work themselves. This is unprecedented to find
this amazing collection of first-hand knowledge, ready to jump in and mobilize an active, dynamic
volunteer program. We recognize that the building of such a program will not be simple.
However, we believe that the foundational principle that will guide the building of the volunteer
program is simple: assume that every would-be volunteer cares as much about animal welfare as
we (the board and leadership) do, and that the volunteer sincerely wants to do his or her part to
make the Orange County animal shelter as humane and welcoming to animals (and human
visitors) as possible.
21
