January 25, 2003
To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing regarding Dean Edwards employment as Director of the Durham County Animal Shelter. I held
the position of Volunteer Coordinator and benefited from Mr. Edwards' leadership throughout his employ,
October 2001 to November 2002.
Mr. Edwards has great vision and tenacity. His forward thinking management style facilitated many
significant changes to the organization. The addition of a first-ever development director has dramatically
changed the direction and goals of the shelter. Much needed accounting systems were put into place, animal
care improved greatly over time and the adoption rate steadily increased. A new on-site medical clinic was
built under Mr. Edwards close watch.
Mr. Edwards possesses extraordinary public relations skills and the image of the shelter in the community
improved as a result.
The loss to the organization of Mr. Edwards is something that will be felt for a long time. He directed more
positive change for the organization than it had seen in many years. The level of resistance to change by the
governing board, along with the acceptance of the status quo is what ultimately led to my own departure.
I strongly recommend Mr. Edwards for any management position where positive outlook and progressive
mindset has a place.
Sincerely,
Katherine L.
