A PROCLAMATION <br />WHEREAS, thousands of adults in this country are unprotected from diseases such as influenza <br />and pneumocaccal pneumonia; and <br />WHEREAS, each year, an average of 20,000 Americans die from influenza-mare than 90 percent <br />of these persons are age 65 or older. Many of these deaths can be prevented through vaccinations; and <br />WHEREAS, Senior Vaccination Season, a statewide vaccination effort, is being held throughout <br />the month of October and into November, to help reduce the number of health complications and deaths <br />associated with these illnesses by promoting adult immunizations; and <br />WHEREAS, Senior Vaccination Season is a collaborative effort in Orange County between UNC <br />Hospitals, Kerr Drug, local churches, local employers, local medical providers and the Health <br />Department; and <br />WHEREAS, Senior Vaccination Season will involve the provision of influenza and pneumococcal <br />pneumonia vaccines to people age 65 and older with Medicare Part B through community-based events <br />and encourages all immunization providers to work year-round with their communities to vaccinate adults <br />by expanding clinic hours, increasing screenings, and distributing educational and promotional materials; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, by joining this effort, agencies, businesses and civic and religious organizations can <br />help protect adults in this County from becoming at risk of death or disability from avaccine-preventable <br />disease; <br />NOW, THEREFORE WE, THE ORANGE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, do hereby proclaim <br />October and November 2000, as "SENIOR VACCINATION SEASON" in Orange County, and call upon <br />the citizens of our County to join us in supporting these efforts to fully immunize our senior adult <br />population. <br />VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br />The vaccination schedule will be put on the County's website and pasted at the Senior Center and <br />placed in the local newspapers. <br />c. Domestic Violence Awareness Month <br />The Board considered proclaiming the month of October as Domestic Violence Awareness <br />Month. <br />Human Rights and Relations Director Annette Moore read the proclamation. <br />Jackie Philips, past Chair of the Human Rights Commission, said that they plan to have a <br />March for Justice on Monday, October 30`". This is in commemoration of Domestic Violence Awareness <br />Month and in memory of victims of domestic violence. The march will be in Chapel Hill, starting at the <br />Women's Center on Henderson Street. They will march to East Franklin Street in front of the post office. <br />The co-sponsors are the Orange County Commission for Women, the New Family Violence Prevention <br />Center of Orange County, the Women's Center, and the Orange County Rape Crisis Center. The <br />speakers will be Commissioner Brown, who will present the proclamation; Sabrina Garcia of the Chapel <br />Hill Police Department Crisis Intervention Unit; and Representative Joe Hackney, who will speak on the <br />issue of domestic violence.
