ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: March 5, 2003 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. ~.-p <br />SUBJECT• Resolution of Appreciation for Tommy Thompson <br />DEPARTMENT: Human Relations Commission/ PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />County Commissioners <br />ATTACHMENT(S): <br />Resolution <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Margaret Brown, Chair <br />TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br />Hillsborough 732-8181 <br />Chapel Hill 968-4501 <br />Durham 688-7331 <br />Mebane 336-227-2031 <br />PURPOSE: To consider adopting a resolution of appreciation for Tommy Thompson of the Red <br />Clay Ramblers for his contribution to Orange County and the field of music. <br />BACKGROUND: Tommy Thompson, a founding member of the Red Clay Ramblers, made <br />many significant creative, cultural and intellectual contributions to the Tar Heel music scene. <br />He developed a devoted national and worldwide following through his performances with the <br />Ramblers on public radio, specifically Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion, <br />appearances on Broadway, and in other countries such as Canada and throughout Europe to <br />the Middle East and Africa. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: None <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board adopt a resolution of <br />appreciation commending Tommy Thompson for his many years of service to the citizens of <br />Orange County and his contribution to American music, and authorize the Chair to sign the <br />resolution on behalf of the Board. <br />
