Late Applications for Homestead Property Tax Exemption
The Board considered four applications for Homestead tax exemptions for the 1999 tax year.
Commissioner Brown said that this item has been on the legislative agenda for the last three
years and she feels very strongly about the benefit of this legislation. She asked the Tax Assessor John
Smith to describe the Homestead Property Tax Exemption program.
John Smith said that the Homestead Property Tax Exemption is for anyone who has an
annual income of $15,000 or below, and the exemption is for the first $20,000. This only applies to the
dwelling that is lived in. The individuals also have to be 65 years of age or older or totally disabled.
Commissioner Brown said that she thought that the legislature was going to be asked to
increase the annual income requirement.
Geoffrey Gledhill said that there is a legislative study committee that is meeting and there will
be a recommendation to the general assembly to increase the property amount to $25,000. He feels that
something will come out of the next general assembly session.
