� <br /> WHEREAS, Dr. Neil Pedersen has been a strong advocate for the needs of school students <br /> in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools district for over 23 years; and <br /> WHEREAS, Dr. Pedersen's dedication and commitment to CHCCS made him the longest- <br /> serving Superintendent in the district's 101-year history and his 18-year tenure <br /> makes him the second longest-serving superintendent currently serving in one <br /> district in North Carolina; and <br /> WHEREAS, Dr. Pedersen has not only made an impact on CHCCS, but also on the entire <br /> Chapel Hill-Carrboro community and has been an educational leader in the <br /> state and nation; and <br /> WHEREAS, during Dr. Neil Pedersen's tenure, McDougle Middle School, McDougle <br /> Elementary School, East Chapel Hill High School, Scroggs Elementary School, <br /> Smith Middle School, Rashkis Elementary School, Carrboro High School, <br /> Phoenix Academy and Morris Grove Elementary School were all constructed; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, Dr. Pedersen was named the 2001 Superintendent of the Year by the North <br /> Carolina Association of School Administrators (NCASA), and also that year he <br /> was one of four finalists for National Superintendent of the Year in a competition <br /> sponsored by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA); and <br /> WHEREAS, Dr. Pedersen's experience and expertise made him a frequent choice for many <br /> county and state level leadership positions over the years including <br /> Superintendent Advisor to the North Carolina State Board of Education, advisor <br /> to the State Board's Committee on Globally Competitive Students, and Co-Chair <br /> of the Superintendent's Division of the North Carolina Association of School <br /> Administrators, as well as service with the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of <br /> Commerce, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public School Foundation, the Orange <br /> County Partnership for Young Children and Orange County Communities in <br /> Schools; and <br /> WHEREAS, Dr. Pedersen's continued skills, experience, and dedication to student <br /> achievement and commitment to excellence have impacted the lives of former <br /> and current students and future residents, and his work is an outstanding <br /> example of service that benefits the community well beyond the school district; <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, do hereby proclaim <br /> Sunday, May 1, 2011 as <br /> NEIL PEDERSEN DAY <br /> in Orange County and urge the public to join us in honoring Dr. Neil Pedersen <br /> and his many contributions, and to participate in the many activities that are <br /> planned for May 1, 2011 in his honor. <br /> This the 19t" day of April, 2011 <br />
