~-~1-I~ <br />~~ <br />ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />RESOLUTION OPPOSING HOUSE BILL 111 <br />WHEREAS, the North Carolina General Assembly is currently considering House Bill 111, <br />entitled "A Bill to be Entitled an Act to Allow Persons with Concealed Handgun Permits to <br />Protect Themselves and Their Families in Restaurants and to Allow a Concealed Handgun <br />Permittee to Carry a Handgun in a Park"; and <br />WHEREAS, Orange County is home to significant portions of Eno River State Park; and <br />WHEREAS, although House Bill 111 authorizes local governments to enact ordinances <br />prohibiting the carrying of concealed handguns in county or city-owned parks, it does not make <br />such ordinances applicable to State Parks, the boundaries of which are within the jurisdiction <br />of local governments; and <br />WHEREAS, Eno River State Park and the Occoneechee State Natural Area are located in <br />whole or in part in Orange County and are popular parks for families with young children; and <br />WHEREAS, allowing firearms to be carried in Eno River State Park and the Occoneechee <br />State Natural Area could endanger those families and young children without significant <br />benefit; <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Orange County Board of County <br />Commissioners opposes House Bill 111 in its current format and requests the North Carolina <br />General Assembly remove the provision in the bill that allows the carrying of concealed <br />weapons in parks. <br />This the 21St day of June <br />Bernadette Pelissier, Chair <br />Orange County Board of Commissioners <br />Attest: <br />Clerk to the Board of Commissioners <br />
