INFORMATION ITEM
~l
~~;. ,.ti.
+~, ~~
I~~~artx~~~.~ ~~" ~~~~~: ~~,~~nt,
MEMORANDUM
TO: David Stancil, DEAPR Director
FROM: Thomas W. Davis, Water Resources- Coordinator
DATE: June 1, 2011
RE: 2011 Annual Observation Well Network Report
Enclosed is the first annual report of the Orange County Groundwater Observation
WeII Network, known as Orange Well Net. This report documents the progress
which has been made toward the goal of having a groundwater observation well
network in Orange County dedicated to monitoring local groundwater conditions.
The network is designed to provide important long-term information regarding the
quantity of groundwater available to the citizens of the County, especially during
times of drought.
The report discusses how arrangements have been made to utilize existing out-of-
service water supply wells for the long-term collection of groundwater level
information. The report includes hydrographs covering the twelve month period
since the initiation of data collection in March 2010 for each of the six bedrock wells
currently utilized in Orange Well Net. This report also discusses expansion of the
existing well network through the utilization of new regolith wells that are being
installed by state and federal natural resource agencies as part of a cooperative
investigation in southern Orange County. It is anticipated that this effort will also
yield important local information, especially in future years as trend analysis
becomes more enabled.
Finally, staff is working to determine groundwater ua/it in each of the observation
wells in Orange Well Net and should have the results of this analysis soon. There
may also be additional means of expanding the well network to enhance the data
collection that is currently underway.
Additional information about the Orange Well Net is available at the H2Orange web
site: http://www.co.orange.nc.us/ercd/h2orange/wellobservation asp
Attachment: 2011 Orange Well Net Annual Report
Orange County Department of Environment, Agriculture, Parks & Recreation
PO Box 8181, Hillsborough, NC 27278
Phone: (919) 245-2510 Fax: (919) 644-3351
