ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: June 16, 2011 <br />Action Agenc(a <br />Item No. t~- <br />SUBJECT: Creation of a General Policy for Board of County Commissioner Advisory <br />Boards <br />DEPARTMENT: County Attorney, County PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />Manager <br />ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />General Advisory Board Policy <br />Specific Board Policy and Procedures .Frank Clifton, 245-230.0 <br />John Roberts, 245-2318 <br />PURPOSE: To review and consider draft policy documents relating to the governance of <br />advisory boards which serve-the needs of the Orange County Board of Commissioners. <br />BACKGROUND: In 2009 the County Manager advised the Board of Commissioners that a <br />review of the number, structure and functionality of the numerous volunteer advisory boards <br />and commissions was warranted. The Board considered the information provided by the <br />County Manager and determined that the advisory board policies and procedures needed to be <br />revised or even completely replaced. The Board. further studied the .issue with representatives <br />of the University of North Carolina School of Government. After this further study the Board <br />directed the County Attorney to draft an advisory board policy document and bring the <br />document back to the Board for further consideration. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: None. <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends the Board examine the draft advisory <br />board policy documents and provide direction to staff. <br />
