Commissioner Brown stated she was pleased to see illiteracy in Spanish also addressed, <br />as well as the use of signage. Ms. Lewis stated there was much discussion in literacy circles about this <br />very issue and that she is working with the media to create a year-long series to encourage literacy. <br />Commissioner Halkiotis sought clarification as whether there was a $2,500.00 <br />commitment from both school systems and Ms. Lewis confirmed this fact. Ms. Lewis also stated that she <br />did not see this as a one-year project, rather they were committed to seeking funds from many <br />community partners. Commissioner Halkiotis encouraged the grass roots effort and was pleased to see <br />momentum to meet the needs of the County's Hispanic community. <br />Commissioner Jacobs stated his priority and continuing support for addressing the <br />illiteracy problems. Ms. Lewis pledged to report back to the Board with more specifics once the program <br />is initiated. <br />A motion was made by Commissioner Jacobs, seconded by Commissioner Carey to <br />appropriate $2,500.00 for the Countywide Literacy Initiative from the Board of County Commissioners <br />contingency fund. <br />VOTE: UNANIMOUS. <br />11. ADJOURNMENT <br />With no further items to be considered, the Orange County Board of Commissioners adjourned <br />their meeting.
