ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: June 7, 2011 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. ~j-- - a <br />SUBJECT: Resolution In Support of Smart Start and More at Four <br />DEPARTMENT: County Commissioners PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): <br />Draft Resolution In Support of Smart <br />Start and More at Four <br />Sample Resolutions from Other Entities <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Bernadette Pelissier, BOCC Chair, 245- <br />2130 <br />Frank Clifton, County Manager, 245- <br />2300 <br />PURPOSE: To consider a Resolution In Support of Smart Start and More at Four. <br />BACKGROUND: The North Carolina General Assembly during the current 2011-12 legislative <br />session is considering funding reductions for both the Smart Start and More at Four programs. <br />Margaret Samuels with Orange County Smart Start has contacted the County and requested <br />that the Board consider a resolution supporting the current level of funding for both programs. <br />A draft resolution, based on a sample resolution provided by Ms. Samuels, is attached. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with consideration of the draft <br />resolution. The financial and other impacts of the potential funding reductions have not yet <br />been determined. <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board discuss the draft <br />resolution, approve the resolution as may be modified- based on Board discussion, authorize the <br />Chair to sign the resolution; and direct the Clerk to the Board to forward the approved resolution <br />to Orange County's legislative delegation, the leaders of the North Carolina General Assembly, <br />and the chairs of the General Assembly's appropriations and education committees. <br />
