<br />The Hoard met at the usual hour 1n the Commisa ionera Room at the Court
<br />Hous a: Present, Collier Cobb, Jr., Chairmen, Ben F, tVi is on and Hubert G.
<br />Laws, Commies loners.
<br />The minutes of the July meetings were read sad approved.
<br />E9r. Z. D. Freeland appeared before the Hoard and stated that due to hie
<br />phye ical condition he was unable to do manual labor, and asked that they
<br />grant him a free license to peddle country produce and other commodities Sn
<br />the County.
<br />Novr Therefore, of tar cons iderntion of the above request end upon motion
<br />of Commissioner Laws, duly seconded by Commissioner Yfils on it 1s hereby order
<br />that Eir. Freeland be granted a free license to peddle merchandise in Orange
<br />County.
<br />G1ra. Aubrey Rarward end Etrs. T. W. Goodrich presented n road petition
<br />asking that the State Righway and Public }Yorks Commies ion take over and main-
<br />tain a road located west of Carrboro, lt. C., known as Parkway Drive, connec ti'.
<br />Righway No. 86 and the Old Greensboro Road, the distance being about 1700 fee
<br />Ltr. Don S. Lfatheson appeared before the Hoard and reported on the conditi
<br />of crops in the county. Ae stated tho the farm labor situation was somewhat li
<br />proved over last year but the wilt and black ehaxilt which was appearing in eom~
<br />sections was causing the tobacco growers a good deal of worry. He stated the
<br />tobacco yield would be somewhat lighter than last year.
<br />A road pe tltion was presented asking that repairs be made to the road
<br />from Efland Righway by Pote at~s Grocery to Cedar Grove Rlgfivay.
<br />A petition was pree anted asking that the State Righway end Public t'lorks
<br />Commission take aver for maintenance nurpos as a one mile strip of public or
<br />private ly maintained road connecting the Efland-Ceder Grove road end the
<br />Efland-Hall's 1,1111 road.
<br />Application of J. N. Stanley to retail beer 1n Orange County, was upon
<br />motion, aooroved.
<br />IIpon motion of Cosunias loner Nils on, duly seconded by Commissioner Lawa,
<br />and all members voting in the affirmative, the following resolution levying
<br />'taxes for the year 1948-1947 Se adopted as follows:
<br />On each poll the sum of 32.OU
<br />On each female dog the sum of 2.OU
<br />On each male dog the sum of 1.00
<br />For General County Purnos as the sum of .15
<br />For Public Re alth Purposes the sum of .03
<br />For Suporior Courts and Jail the sum of .03
<br />For General County Debt Service the sum of .155
<br />For School Currant Expense the sum of .105
<br />For School Capital Outlay the sum of .17
<br />For School Hebt Service the sum of .lU
<br />For }Yelfare Service the sum of .14
<br />The above making a county wide total rate of 30.88 on the each 5100.00
<br />valuation of property.
<br />Ir,{ addition to the above levies, the maximum amounts of taxes allowed to
<br />be levied under Schedule B of the Revenue Act of 1939, as amended, are he reb
<br />levied. The County Tax Collector Se hereby authorized and instructed to Coll
<br />the maximum taxes as provided by said State Revenue Act.
<br />On motion of Commissioner Lavrs, seconded by Commissioner cii lson, and all
<br />members of the Beard voting in the ei'firmati va, the fcllowing resolution cov
<br />ing appropriations for the fiscal year 1948-19x7 is adopted, to-wit:
