ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS 2 <br />PRGCLAMATIGN HGN~RING DR. NEIL PEDERSEN <br />WHEREAS, Dr. Neil Pedersen has served the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools CHCCS} as <br />Superintendent for eighteen years and prior to that as Assistant Superintendent for five <br />years; and <br />WHEREAS, Dr. Neil Pedersen has been a strong advocate for the needs of school students in the <br />Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools district for over 23 years; and <br />WHEREAS, Dr. Pedersen's dedication and commitment to CHCCS made him the longest-serving <br />Superintendent in the district's 101-year History and his 18-year tenure makes him the <br />second longest-serving superintendent currently serving in one district in North <br />Carolina; and <br />WHEREAS, Dr. Pedersen has not only made an impact on CHCCS, but also on the entire Chapel <br />Hill-Carrboro community and has been an educational leader in the state and nation; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, during Dr. Neil Pedersen's tenure, McDougle Middle School, McDougle Elementary <br />School, East Chapel Hill High School, Scroggs Elementary School, Smith Middle <br />School, Rashkis Elementary School, Carrboro High School, Phoenix Academy and <br />Morris Grove Elementary Schoo! were all constructed; and <br />WHEREAS, Dr. Pedersen was named the 201 Superintendent of the Year by the North Carolina <br />Association of School Administrators ~NCASA}, and also that year he was one of four <br />finalists for National Superintendent of the Year in a competition sponsored by the <br />American Association of School Administrators ~AASA}; and <br />WHEREAS, Dr. Pedersen's experience and expertise made him a frequent choice far many county <br />and state level leadership positions over the years including Superintendent Advisor to <br />the North Carolina State Board of Education, advisor to the State Board's Committee on <br />Globally Competitive Students, and Co-Chair of the-- Superintendent's -Division of the <br />North Carolina Association of School Administrators, as well as service with the Chapel <br />Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce, .the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public School <br />Foundation, the orange County Partnership for Young ..Children and Orange County <br />Communities in Schools; and <br />WHEREAS, Dr. Pedersen's continued skills, experience, and dedication to student achievement and <br />commitment to excellence have impacted the lives of former and current students and <br />future residents, and his work is an outstanding example of service that benefits the <br />community v~ell beyond the school district; <br />NGW, THEREFORE, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, do hereby proclaim Sunday, <br />May 1, 2411 as <br />NEIL PEDERSEN DAY <br />in Grange County and urge the public to join us in honoring Dr. Neil Pedersen and his <br />many contributions, and to participate in the many activities that are planned for May 1, <br />2011 in his honor. <br />This the 19~~ day of April, 2011. <br />Bernadette Pe[issier, Chair <br />Urange County Board of Commissioners <br />
