Resolution to Grant a Waiver of Deportation to Jose Federico Campos <br />Commissioner Halkiotis presented this resolution giving background information on the situation <br />and the community's efforts to help Mr. Campos. Commissioner Gordon stated that while she was <br />sympathetic to the humanitarian concerns behind this resolution, she did not personally know anything about <br />Mr. Campos, and therefore could not sign her name on the resolution. <br />A motion was made by Commissioner Halkiotis, seconded by Commissioner Crowther to <br />approve the resolution as stated below: <br />RESOLUTION <br />REQUESTING THE U.S. GOVERNMENT TO <br />GRANT A WAIVER OF DEPORTATION TO <br />JOSE FEDERICO CAMPOS <br />Whereas, Mr. Jose Federico Campos is a positive, contributing member of our community, and <br />Whereas, by all accounts, Mr. Campos is a person of outstanding moral character, a hard and honest <br />worker, and a decent and loving family man; and <br />Whereas, Mr. Campos' deportation from the United States has caused extreme hardship to not only his five <br />children and other family in the State of North Carolina, but also to our entire community; and <br />Whereas, Mr. Campos' speedy reunification with his family in Chapel Hill, North Carolina is the only humane <br />and sensible option for his family and our community. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, THE ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS DOES HEREBY RESOLVE: <br />Section 1. The Board of County Commissioners hereby request that the Government of the <br />United States immediately grant a waiver of deportation to Mr. Jose Federico Campos. <br />Section 2. A copy of this resolution shall be sent to President William Jefferson Clinton, Governor <br />James B. Hunt, Senator Jesse helms, Senator Lauch Faircloth, Senator-elect John Edwards and <br />Congressman David Price. <br />VOTE: AYES, 4; NOS, 1 (Commissioner Gordon) <br />NOTE: The resolution and letter to President Clinton were signed by four County Commissioners. <br />6.
