Fikes, 245-2490 <br />PURPOSE: To approve a proclamation designating April as Fair Housing Month 2011. <br />BAG[~GROUND: April 291 ~ marks the 43rd anniversary of the Federal Fair Housin Act of <br />ill ~ . r . g <br />1968 and the 28 anniversary of the North Carolina Fair Haus~ng Act, which provide for equal <br />opportunity in the sale, rental, and financing of housing. <br />The US Department of Housing and Urban Development THUD} has designated "Live Free <br />From Housing Discrimination' as the theme for activities to acknowledge April 2911 as Fair <br />Housing Month. <br />Established in 198?', the grange County Human Relations Commission Commission} is <br />charged with enforcing the grange County Civil Rights Ordinance that prohibits discrimination in <br />housing and public accommodations on the basis of race, age, sex, religion, familial status, <br />national origin, color, veteran's status and disability. <br />In keeping with the HUD theme for 2911 Fair Housing Month, the Commission will continue its <br />campaign to affirmatively further fair housing through education and outreach efforts to Orange <br />County residents, landlords, and management companies. <br />Fair treatment, equal access and mutual respect are the benchmarks of the Commission's <br />charge and commitment. Through education, outreach and partnerships, the Commission works <br />to prevent discrimination and foster mutual understanding in grange County. <br />F[NANCIAL IMPACT: There ~is no financial impact associated with consideration of the <br />praclamation. <br />RECOMMENDATION~S~: The Manager recommends that the Board approve the proclamation <br />and authorize the Chair tv sign the proclamation, <br />
