Pat Connolly from the Orange Person Chatham Mental Health organization told about their <br />program. She said that many of the people they work with live in substandard housing and some are <br />homeless. She asked the Board to support them in an amount of $150,000 to help the people with special <br />needs and very low income. <br />Mathew Cox said that he is a patient with disabilities and now lives at the Chapel Hill Overlook in <br />a nice and clean apartment with rent that is affordable. Without a program like this, he would be homeless. <br />He said that more is needed for housing for people with disabilities. <br />Rick Williston said that he lives in the Overlook apartments. He mentioned that a lot of people <br />have a hard time making a living and without these apartments he would have no place to live. <br />David Mcllwain said that he appreciates the HUD development. He lives in the Overlook <br />apartments which is working very well for him. His rent is not high and it is very comfortable. <br />Susan Levy, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity asked for $60,000 for the construction of <br />six (6) homes. She is also asking for $3,000 for administrative costs. They just dedicated their 50th home <br />and want to complete another 50 homes in less time than it took to build the first 50 homes. She told about <br />the partnership that is formed when building a home. The $60,000 will leverage over $200,000 in private <br />donations. <br />Maxine Mitchell from Empowerment Inc. said that she is asking for $120,000 in funds to help <br />purchase land or existing housing to renovate. They have $60,000 in HOME funds to purchase land and do <br />some renovations which they plan to do before June 30. <br />Tara Fikes said that the public comment period will stay open during the month of April. <br />A motion was made by Commissioner Halkiotis, seconded by Commissioner Crowther to receive <br />the public comments and to hold open the comment period during the month of April. <br />VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br />8.
