Lindy Pendergrass, Sheriff, ext. 2900 <br />Local Law Enforcement Block Grant Award <br />TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br />Hillsborough 732-8181 <br />Chapel Hill 968-4501 <br />Durham 688-7331 <br />Mebane 336-227-2031 <br />PURPOSE: To conduct a public hearing for written and oral comments on the Local Law <br />Enforcement Block Grant. <br />BACKGROUND: Since 1996, the Orange County Sheriff s Department has received proceeds <br />from the U.S. Department of Justice Local Law Enforcement Block Grant. The awards provide <br />units of local government with funds to offset costs of reducing crime and improving public <br />safety. <br />According to guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Justice, these funds are awarded to local <br />law enforcement agencies using a formula based on Part I Violent Crimes as reported to the <br />Federal Bureau of Investigation's Uniform Crime Reports. Examples of Part I crimes include <br />murder, robbery and aggravated assault. Two law enforcement agencies in Orange County are <br />due to receive proceeds related to this award during this fiscal year. The Town of Chapel Hill <br />Police Department will receive $16,335, and the town will share 20 percent of its award with the <br />Orange County Sheriff's Department. This equates to $3,267. The Sheriff's Department will <br />use the grant proceeds to offset departmental operating costs. <br />Prior to the obligation of any funds received under the Local Law Enforcement Block Grants <br />Program, the Orange County Sheriff's Office shall establish or designate an advisory board. <br />Membership on the advisory board must include a representative from: <br />a. the local sheriff s office; <br />b. the local prosecutor's office; <br />c. the local court system; <br />d. the local public school system; and <br />
