A4ach(nen+ 5 78 <br />NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING <br />BEFORE THE <br />BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br />AND <br />HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION <br />OF <br />ORANGE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA <br />In Accordance with Section 3.7 of the Ordinance Creating the Historic Preservation Commission <br />(HPC) of Orange County, also referred to as the "Historic Preservation Ordinance," notice is <br />hereby given that the Board of County Commissioners and the HPC shall hold a public hearing <br />on Tuesday, March 3, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at the Department of Social Services, <br />Hillsborough Commons, 113 Mayo Street, Hillsborough, North Carolina to receive citizen <br />comment on the application and proposed ordinance for designating the following property as <br />an Orange County Local Historic Landmark: <br />LHD -1 -11 Murphey School <br />The subject property is a seven -acre tract located at 3729 Murphy School Road in Chapel <br />Hill Township (PIN #9892 -59- 5445). <br />Named for North Carolina's "Father of Public Education" Archibald D. Murphey, Murphey <br />School was constructed in 1923 as part of the early twentieth century consolidated <br />school movement. Well- preserved, the rectangular one -story brick building features <br />elements of the Classical and Spanish Revival styles. An auditorium was added to the <br />west side of the building in 1936 and fronted with a two -story classical Doric portico <br />(temple front). The building was designed by Henri Colvin Linthicum, a specialist in <br />school design and partner with his father in the architectural firm of Linthicum and <br />Linthicum. A handful of outbuildings survive on the property dating to the first half of the <br />twentieth century, including a 1923 frame bungalow that served as the teacherage. <br />All interested citizens are invited to attend the public hearing and be heard. <br />Questions regarding the application may be directed to the Orange County Department of <br />Environment, Agriculture, Parks and Recreation located in the Environment and Agricultural <br />Center, 306F Revere Road, Hillsborough, North Carolina.
