13
14
HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
CERTIFIED MAIL
December 1, 2010
Dear Property Owner:
This is an official notice to inform you that the Orange County Historic Preservation Commission
(HPC) has received an application from Mr. Jay Miller to consider designating Murphey School,
located at 3729 Murphy School Road, as an Orange County Local Historic Landmark. Similar to the
National Register of Historic Places, the Local Landmark Program is primarily an honorary program
designed to identify properties that are significant to the community in terms of architecture, history or
cultural importance. The designation of a property as a local historic landmark is a prestigious honor
recognized by the Board of Commissioners through the adoption of an ordinance.
The HPC will be discussing the Murphey School application at its regular meeting on
Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., in the Conference Room of the of the Environment
and Agricultural Center at 306 Revere Road, Hillsborough, North Carolina. The local landmark
designation process includes several steps, including review by the North Carolina State Historic
Preservation Office (SHPO) and a public hearing held jointly by the HPC and the Board of County
Commissioners. The December meeting is the second step of the designation process; the HPC will
review comments from the SHPO and decide whether to request a joint public hearing with the
Board of County Commissioners to receive public comments on the application.
As the owner of property located within 500 feet of the Murphey School site, you will receive notice of
each of these meetings. HPC meetings are open to the public. You are welcome to come to any of
these meetings to listen, to comment about the application, to ask questions, or to offer information
about the school, its history and the surrounding community. If you have questions or would like
additional information about the process or upcoming meeting, please feel free to call me at (919)
245 -2517.
Sincerely,
Christina R.
