She verified that the County Commissioners had received her comments and
changes and that they were in agreement.
Frank Clifton asked Carlo Robustelli to explain what this program is.
Carlo Robustelli thanked the County Commissioners and the Department on Aging for
this opportunity. He said that the vision in Orange County is to provide new programs while
maintaining existing programs and services for the community college in Orange County. This
is an extension of that effort. This program has been provided in Durham County for a long
time and there was never a kitchen to be able to provide it in Orange County and this will make
it possible. He explained the program, which teaches the very basic foundations of culinary
cooking. This enables students to be able to work as chefs and caterers. There is a focus on
sustainable preparation of food.
Janice Tyler, Acting Director of the Department on Aging, said that she hopes that this
will be a partnership and this will result in cooking food on-site for the daily nutrition program.
Commissioner Gordon and Commissioner Jacobs commended both parties on such an
innovative program.
Commissioner Hemminger said that she hopes that the public schools that are sending
their students to Alamance Community College were contacted to possibly send them to DTCC
in Orange County.
Chair Pelissier echoed the comments.
Commissioner Jacobs congratulated the County Commissioners for having the foresight
to put commercial kitchens in both of the senior centers.
A motion was made by Commissioner Jacobs, seconded by Commissioner Gordon to
approve and authorize the Manager to sign the facility use agreement, with the changes as
submitted by Commissioner Gordon.
VOTE: UNANIMOUS
