He feels that some items will take very little work while others will require a lot of energy and
resources in order to accomplish the stated goal.
The following questions, comments and suggestions were made during this review and are listed
below for reference.
The Statement of Corporate Citizenship #17 - #38 should be emphasized.
The hiring of local workers was discussed. Commissioner Gordon feels that Orange County needs to
hire locally.
Combining items 1, 3, 4, and 5 was suggested.
In an effort to encourage all governments to work together, the small business guide has been placed
wherever building permits are issued (#10).
G.E. does hire from Orange County. Also, the new Lowes store in Chapel Hill will be hiring people
from the County's Work First program, starting at $6.00 per hour plus benefits. All new businesses are
requested to list their jobs with the local Employment Security Commission.
Ted Abernathy listed the new priorities which the Economic Development Commission adopted as
part of the Strategic plan. He also listed those programs they now manage and expect to continue, like
meeting with clients and the Women's RoundTable. He noted that he now serves on 18 boards.
The representation of the Research Triangle Group was questioned and Mr. Abernathy said that the
flow of clients has steadily increased.
Commissioner Gordon suggested combining items 9, 11, and 12 dealing with sustainable
development into one focus area and designating it as a top priority.
Mr. Abernathy will provide copies of the final report produced by the Town of Chapel Hill on
sustainability.
Commissioner Brown asked that the Economic Development Commission set some strategies on how
to address some of the sustainability issues.
Commissioner Carey suggested not duplicating the efforts of the Shaping Orange County's Future
Task Force on sustainability issues.
Planning Director Marvin Collins stated that eight committees will be coming back to the Task Force
with recommendations on sustainability.
Commissioner Carey asked that PDR and TDR be one of the priorities.
